The Gallery » Body of WorkThis belt symbolizes the agreement and conditions under which the Iroquois welcomed the white people to this land . "You say that you are our father and we are your sons. " We say We will not be like father and son, but like brothers . " this Wampum belt confirms our words . These two rows will symbolize two paths or two vessels, traveling down the same river together . One birch bark canoe, will be for the Indian people, there laws their ways, The other, a ship, will be for the white, their laws, their customs and their ways. The two shall travel the river together but in their own vessel, Neither shall outpace or interfere with the others affairs, remaining separate and parallel forever that is as long as the grass grows, the rivers flow and the sun shines. Everlasting.
